ACC Internet Cribbage
Cribbage Cups go to Duckworth
and Meyer
January 30, 2004:
On alternate Mondays, the ACC has been presenting its experimental
Cribbage Cup tournaments which combine a round-robin qualifying round
with single elimination playoffs. January featured two such events, both
of which were won by ACC members.
On January 12, tournament director Joan
Dulworth (+LovesPeace) divided the 54 participants into into nine
six-player groups. Everyone played five games against the other members
of their group, with the winners of three or more games advancing to the
4-stake playoffs. Programmer Hal Mueller (_Ha1scrib_) from
Hamilton, ON, Mark Niemerow (WhyteLotus1) from Calabasas,
CA, Joe Savage (svg_7) from Elizabeth, NJ and Gerald D.
Oxford (jerryox) from Crescent City, CA compiled the best
qualifying round records, and were rewarded with first round byes.
At the end, though, it was Richard W. Duckworth
(duckmaster1) of Port Orchard, WA, prevailing over Allen Nypen
(A0939) of Springfield, OR in the Finals. Niemerow tied for Third
Place with Don Eastwood (NC310Crib), thus giving ACC
members a clean sweep of the final four. John Alig (JohnAZ)
of Mesa, AZ shared Fifth Place with Oxford and David Hardy (novatex)
of Spring, TX, who was playing in his first ACC Internet tournament.
The January 26 event featured a 60 player
field. In an unusual twist, exactly 32 of them finished the qualifying
round with three or more wins, so there were no first round byes.
Robert Meyer (a9legged_spider) from Oceanside, CA prevailed
in the Finals over John Alig (JohnAZ) of Mesa, AZ. Third
Place went to Dennis Allen (DeadHoleDennis) of Everett,
MA. All three players are accomplished Cribbage Cup veterans, having
previously reached the top eight in these events. Sue Edwards (CO434)
from Denver and past winner Michael
D'Elena (RI971) of Providence finished in the Fifth Place
bracket. The tournament was directed by Karen Peake (+Lady_Amber),
who kept track of the pairings, which are particularly complicated in
this type of event.
Cribbage Cup tournaments are held every second or
third Monday at 4:30 PM PST in Tournament Room 5 (unlike most other ACC
events, which are held in Tournament Room 6). Note that you are expected
to complete all five games in the qualifying round, regardless of how
you fare. Leaving early disrupts the game-to-game pairings, complicates
the tournament director's job, and can lead to your suspension from ACC
Internet play, so please don't do it!
